Astakine, called also Astakine 1 is an endogenous cytokine-like factor from the freshwater crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus. For a related factor see: Astakine 2.
Astakine is required for the differentiation and growth of hemopoietic stem cells in vitro (Söderhäll et al, 2005). Astakine induces a strong hematopoiesis response in live animals. An astakine homolog has been found in the shrimp, Penaeus monodon, where it appears to be significantly expressed at all larval stages.
