[target cell]
This term has multiple meanings:
(-1-)
any cell type to which a stimulus of whatever kind, is directed. Cells affected selectively, for example, by cytokines, hormones, viruses, bacteria, antibodies etc. most likely also express receptors for these entities on their cell surface. For example, in paracrine signaling the target cells for a cytokine produced by one cell is another cell in the immediate vicinity that expresses a receptor for this cytokine (see also: bystander cells). In autocrine signaling the target cell for the cytokine produced by the cell is the producer cell itself.
