[transmembrane metalloproteinase-like, disintegrin-like, cysteine-rich 3] The gene encoding this protein has been cloned from a testis-derived library of the macaque (Macaca fascicularis) (Frayne et al, 1998). The protein is a member of the ADAM protein family and has been given the designation ADAM18. It is found in spermatogenic cells in testis sections and on the sperm surface during epididymal transit (Frayne et al, 2002). The human gene appears to express a functional protein, unlike the related genes tMDC-1 and tMDC-2.
