These specialized cells (abbr. PSC cells) are found in the Drosophila melanogaster lymph gland, a hematopoietic organ in which pluripotent blood cell progenitors proliferate and mature into differentiated hemocytes.
These cells are specified early in the embryo by the homeotic gene Antennapedia and express the signaling molecule Hedgehog. In the absence of posterior signaling centre cells or the Hedgehog signal, the multipotent precursor population of the medullary zone of the lymph gland is lost because cells differentiate prematurely, showing that posterior signaling centre cells function as a hematopoietic
