These cells in the parathyroid gland produce the hormone parathyroid hormone (PTH) (Cape and Rosol, 1989; Thiele, 1986). These cells sense changes in extracellular calcium concentrations by means of special calcium-sensing receptors and play a key role in mineral ion homeostasis (Akerström et al, 2005).
