The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Castells et al (1994). gp49 was defined originally as a 49 kDa surface glycoprotein expressed preferentially on mouse IL3 dependent, bone marrow-derived mast cells, which are immature progenitor cells. The protein contains two intracellular ITIM motifs (Katz et al, 1996). Castell et al (1994) have described two cDNAs derived from this gene, encoding gp49B1 and gp49B2, which differs from gp49B1 by the absence of exon 6 that encodes the transmembrane region of the protein.
