These non-coding RNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II from the cis-acting enhancer elements of various genes and were described first by Kim et al (2010) who reported that RNA polymerase II at neuronal activity-regulated enhancers transcribes enhancer RNAs bi-directionally within enhancer domains defined by the presence of histone H3 monomethylated at lysine 4. The level of enhancer RNA expression at neuronal enhancers positively correlates with the level of mRNA synthesis at nearby genes.
