This insect neurohormone is produced by two pairs of neurons (termed VM neurons) the axons of which project through the length of the central nervous system as well as to peripheral neurohaemal sites (Truman and Copenhaver, 1989). The Drosophila melanogaster hormone, encoded by gene CG5400, is also being referred to as Ecdysis activator. The gene has been cloned by Horodyski et al (1993), and the deduced sequence is 58 % identical (36 of 62 amino acids) to that of Manduca sexta eclosion hormone, the gene of which has been cloned also (Kataoka et al, 1987; Horodyski et al, 1989; Kamito et al, 1992).
