[Cytokine response modifier C] This gene is encoded in the genome of the Brighton Red strain of cowpox virus [cowpox virus cytokine response modifier C] (Smith et al, 1996). The vaccinia virus gene equivalent to crmC is called A53R (Alcami et al, 1999).
crmC is expressed at late times during viral infection. It encodes a soluble, secreted protein that is a member of the TNF receptor superfamily. crmC protein is related to another protein, crmB, a distinct poxvirus gene also encoding a soluble TNF binding protein.
