These cells are called also axo-axonal cells (Somogyi, 1977; Somogyi et al, 1982). Chandelier cells are found in all regions of the hippocampal formation and have been described in the visual or auditory cortex in the cat (Fairén and Valverde, 1980), rat (Peters et al, 1982), monkey and man (De Carlos et al, 1987). The name for this cell type derives from its unique axonal structure, which looks like an old-fashioned chandelier.
Chandelier cells are specialized types of neurons (interneurons) with many axonal arborizations (for a recent overviewsee: Wang Y et al, 2016). The axons of chandelier cells specifically terminate on the axon initial segments of projection neurons
