This term has been used as a generic term for peptides derived from milk proteins, in particular caseins but also other proteins, that affect immune defense and/or neuroendocrine information transfer (Schlimme and Meisel, 1995) and thus may play a role as food hormones. The term is used often to refer to peptides that inhibit angiotensin-1 converting enzyme (CD143) and, therefore, have an effect on blood pressure (for an overview see also: FitzGerald et al, 2002).
Strictly speaking, the term applies to bioactive fragments derived from various types of caseins. Those inhibitors derived from alpha-lactalbumin and beta-lactoglobulin are often being referred to as lactokinins. For convenience, this entry lists all
