abbr. CMCD. This term has been used to refer to cell death involving the breakdown of calcium homeostasis such as prolonged cytosolic calcium elevation. The underlying processes regulated by calcium can be observed in many different cell types and may be those leading to cell death by apoptosis or autophagy (for review see: Harr and Distelhorst, 2010). For one distinct example of calcium-mediated cell death see also: excitotoxic cell death.
For other entries pertaining to cell death mechanisms see also the Apoptosis and Cell Death Dictionary section of this encyclopedia.
