also: Villin-1. approved gene symbol: VIL1. Villin, a 95 kDa protein, is a major component of the brush border cytoskeleton. The cDNA has been cloned by Pringault E et al (1986) who also reported on the structure of the human villin gene (Pringault E et al, 1991). Villin modifies the organisation of actin filaments in epithelial cells in a calcium-dependent manner (Northrop et al, 1986; Zhai et al, 2001; Kumar and Khurana, 2004; Kumar et al, 2004), thereby regulating multiple epithelial cell functions (Khurana and George, 2008) Villin has been shown to bind lysophosphatidic acid and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (Kumar et al, 2004; Tomar et al, 2009), and most of its activity is inhibited by binding.
