Vasculostatin is a proteolytic cleavage product of the transmembrane protein BAI-1 [brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor-1] and consists of the 120 kDa extracellular domain of BAI-1 (Kaur et al, 2005). It is being referred to also as Vstat120.
Vasculostatin inhibits the migration of endothelial cells in vitro and dramatically reduces in vivo angiogenesis. It suppresses tumor growth and vascular density in mice.
Vasculostatin anti-angiogenic activity has been shown to require binding to CD36 expressed on microvascular endothelial cells (Kaur et al, 2009). Klenotic et al (2010) have reported that binding activates an apoptosis
