This protein is encoded by an open reading frame (orf) of the U83 gene in human herpesvirus HHV-6 variant B [Herpesvirus-6B U83 protein]. The protein contains a signal sequence and an arrangement of cystein residues characteristic of the chemokines. French et al (1999) have described the existence of an alternative splice form of U83. Splicing abrogates production of the chemokine-like protein by yielding a truncated protein. The full-length product accumulates later in the infection cycle than the truncated form. Although U83 shows a high degree of sequence variation in different strains of HHV6, the splice site causing the production of the truncated protein is conserved.
