This tetrapeptide with the sequence TKPR (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) has been identified as a naturally occurring stimulator of phagocytosis (Najjar and Nishioka, 1970; Nishioka et al, 1972), mimicking the activity of a gamma-globulin fraction on the phagocytosis activity of human neutrophils (Fidalgo and Najjar, 1967). In neutrophils Tuftsin enhances phagocytosis of particles, bacteria and latex, pinocytosis of albumin and also induces migration of neutrophils (Nishioka et al, 1972).
Tuftsin corresponds to amino acids 289-292 of the IgG heavy chain (IgG heavy chain (289-292); Immunoglobulin G heavy chain (289-292); IgG1 VH (289-292)). The tuftsin sequence is located in the CH2
