[TEM8(+), TEM8(-)]
[Tumor endothelial marker 8] TEM8 has been identified originally by St Croix et al (2000) as a protein expressed preferentially in tumor-associated endothelial cells. Carson-Walter et al (2001) have demonstrated abundant expression in tumor vessels and the vasculature of the developing mouse embryo. Expression in normal adult mouse tissues is either undetectable or detected only in a small fraction of the vessels. Three splice variants of the gene, V1 (564 amino acids), V2 (368 amino acids), and V3 (333 amino acids) have been described by St Croix et al (2000). Variants V1 and V2 are type-1 integral membrane proteins with a single transmembrane helix, whereas V3 is a secreted form.
Bradley et al (2001) have identified TEM8 variant V2 as a cellular receptor for Protective Antigen
