abbr. PIF (a term with multiple meanings). (also abbr. MPIF [muscle proteolysis inducing factor]) This factor was identified initially in the serum of febrile patients and cancer patients with weight loss (Belizario et al, 1991; Clowes et al, 1983; Romette et al, 1986). It is produced also by monocytes (Dinarello et al, 1984). The factor of approximately 4 kDa induces the accelerated release of amino acids by muscle cells, the uptake of amino acids by liver cells, and the synthesis of acute phase proteins (see: acute phase reaction) (Loda et al, 1984). PIF is identical with a cleavage product of IL1 that can function as an active mediator of IL1 effects.
