Potide-G is a small antimicrobial peptide isolated from potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Golden Valley) (Kim et al, 2006). Potide-G potently inhibits the growth of a variety of bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Clavibacter michiganense subsp. michiganinse) and fungal (Candida albicans and Rhizoctonia solani) strains. The peptide almost completely suppresses the proteolytic activity of trypsin, chymotrypsin and papain and has no hemolytic activity. The N-terminal sequence (residues 1-11) is identical to that of potato proteinase inhibitor, a member of the Kunitz superfamily.
