This antimicrobial peptide, which shows high sequence similarity with defensins from other ticks and arthropods, has been found in the midgut of the hard tick Ixodes persulcatus. It has antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Corynebacterium renale, but not Gram-negative bacteria except Escherichia coli O157 (Saito et al, 2009). Miyoshi et al (2016) have reported that the antimicrobial activity of Persulcatusin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is stronger than that of other antimicrobial peptides without apparent damage to mammalian and human cells
