The approved gene symbol is SPINK4 [serine protease inhibitor kazal-type 4]. PEC-60 is an acronym for peptide with N-terminal glutamic acid, C-terminal cysteine, and a total of 60 residues.
PEC-60 is a peptide of 60 amino acids structurally related to the PSTI [pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor]. It has been isolated from pig intestines and found to inhibit glucose-induced insulin secretion from perfused pancreas in a hormonal manner (Agerberth et al, 1989). Ahrén et al (1992) have reported that PEC-60 inhibits glucose- and carbachol-induced insulin secretion in mice and rats but has no effect on basal plasma insulin levels.
