These murine cells, sometimes being referred to as TIB-64 cells, are used as model systems for studies of mast cell biology and biochemistry and to probe roles of mast cells under physiological and pathological conditions. For examples of mice lacking mast cells to probe their functions in vivo see: mast cell-deficient mice.
Although these cells belong to the mast cell lineage, they are transformed cells derived from a methylcholanthrene-induced mastocytoma. The cells grow progressively after intraperitoneal or subcutaneous transplantation in syngeneic DBA/2 mice
