this antimicrobial peptide, EWKLPDLIINHITLTRRNCFKYRCG, is found in the housefly. Its expression is upregulated in response to infection with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Muscin is effective against a number of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria but lacks activity against Neurospora crassa. Tang et al (2019) have reported that the expression of Muscin is blocked by Mdeiger, a Musca domestica ortholog of Eiger.
