Metallothionein-1

abbr. MT-1. Metallothionein-1 is a member of a family of metal-binding proteins (see: metallothioneins). It is known mainly for its intracellular role as a binding protein for heavy metals (Hamer, 1986). Metallothionein-1 and metallothionein-2 (MT-2) are very similar in expression profile, structure, and function, and are therefore often referred to as the single entity metallothionein-1/2 (MT-1/2). Metallothionein-2, referred to also as MT-2A [metallothionein-2A] has been identified independently as CRG-4 [Cytokine responsive gene-4].
