(approved gene symbol) [gasdermin C] GSDMC is a member of the family of gasdermins. The gene has been identified by Tamura et al (2007). Watanabe have identified the gene and referred to it as MLZE [Melanoma-derived leucine zipper-containing extranuclear factor], showing that it is expressed preferentially in metastatic melanoma cells.
Miguchi et al (2016) have implicated GSDMC in the promotion of colorectal cancer, showing that is is upregulated by inactivation of the TGFBR2 receptor in the presence of mutated apc [Adenomatous polyposis coli]. Silencing of GSDMC expression leads to a significant reduction in the proliferation and tumorigenesis of colorectal cancer cell lines, whereas the overexpression of GSDMC enhances cell proliferation.
