[Fananas cell]
[correct spelling: Fañanás cells] called also, glia of Fananas. These cells of unknown function represent a subtype of glial cells (astrocytes) in the molecular layer of the cerebellar cortex (Fañanas JRY, 1916; Chan-Palay and Palay, 1972).
Cell bodies of Fananas cells are dispersed in the Purkinje cell layer, tend to resemble fibrocytes, and have extension with a feathered appearance. By way of contrast, cell bodies of Bergmann glial cells form single rows, are epitheloid in appearance and send extensions to the pial surface.
