This Caenorhabditis elegans gene is an innate immune response gene upregulated in response to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA14). Kimura et al (2012) have referred to the gene as mul-1 [mucin-like gene-1], showing that the expression is upregulated also in response to ionizing radiation and depends on transcription factor elt-2. Pre-treatment with ionizing radiation before exposure to bacteria significantly increases nematode survival rates. Silencing of the mul-1 gene leads to growth retardation after treatment with ionizing radiation.
Liu et al (2013) have reported that F49F1.6 is an early response gene upregulated in response to infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
