[exocrine differentiation and proliferation factor] The gene encoding this protein has been identified by Jiang et al (2008). Exdpf is a protein of 117 amino acids that is thought to be a putative signaling molecule, containing two SH2 domains and two SH3 domains as well as other conserved domains, suggesting that Exdpf may function in response to signals from adjacent mesoderm tissues.
The protein is highly expressed in the exocrine cell progenitors and differentiated cells of the developing pancreas in zebrafish. Knock-down of exdpf causes loss or significant reduction of exocrine cells due to lineage-specific
