Eumenitin (LNLKGIFKKVASLLT) has been isolated from the venom of the solitary eumenine wasp Eumenes rubronotatus. Eumenitin has inhibitory activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. It moderately stimulates degranulation from rat peritoneal mast cells (see also: MCD peptide family [mast cell degranulation peptide family]), but has no hemolytic activity against human erythrocytes (Konno et al, 2006). Eumenitin binds preferentially to charged lipid membranes and is able to form pores (Arcisio-Miranda et al, 2008). Konno et al (2006) have suggested that the peptide may play a role in preventing potential infection by microorganisms during prey consumption by their larvae.
