a protein encoded in the genome of equine herpesvirus type 2. E8 shows sequence similarity to the death effector domains of the FADD and Caspase-8, both of which are involved in signaling cell death by apoptosis initiated through FAS antigen (see: APO-1) and TNF receptor R1. E8 is a member of a family of virus-encoded proteins designated FLIP (FLICE-inhibitory proteins).
