The E2 antigen has been identified by Bernard et al (1988) on T-cells and monocytes, but not on B-cells, myeloid cells, of peripheral blood and bone marrow. The antigen is identical with the antigen encoded by the MIC2 gene, and hence identical with CD99 (Gelin et al, 1989).
The 32 kDa E2 antigen displays an isomorphism: two epitopes (defined by monoclonal antibodies O662 and L129) are widely distributed on all T-cells. Two other epitopes defined by monoclonal antibodies D44 and 12E7 are restricted to T-cell subsets (hence the designation CD99R (R = restricted) (Gelin et al, 1991).
