[cytokine fusion toxin]
Cytotoxic chimaeric proteins derived from a number of biologically active cytokines. These toxins are obtained by fusion of cDNAs encoding cytokines with cDNAs containing the coding regions of toxic protein molecules (for genetically engineered cytokines see also: Recombinant cytokines, Muteins).
The cytokine portion of the fusion proteins can interact with the high affinity binding receptors. These receptors are rapidly internalized after ligand binding and the toxic protein is activated inside the cell.
