This protein is encoded by strains of Helicobacter pylori that are highly associated with peptic ulcer disease and invasive gastric cancer (Perez-Perez et al, 1999). The protein is transferred to eukaryotic epithelial cells under the control of a variety of bacterial genes (Fischer et al, 2001) and is tyrosine-phosphorylated (Asahi et al, 2000).
