[Colchicine sensitivity] This phenotype has been observed in cell lines established from patients exhibiting C-anaphases or tetraploidy in lymphocyte cultures. The cells are colchicine-resistant due to reduced permeability to the drug and show cross-resistances to daunomycin, emetine, vinblastine, and vincristine and collateral sensitivity to Xylocaine (Chamla et al, 1980; Chamla and Begueret, 1982).
The underlying cause for preferential resistance to colchicine is caused by a spontaneous mutation in the MDR-1 gene, which encodes P-glycoprotein-1 (Choi et al, 1988).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD243.
