[Cell death protein 9] CED9 (280 amino acids) is expressed primarily during embryogenesis of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. CED9 and mammalian BCLxL, which is a member of the BCL2 family of proteins, are considered homologous (Hengartner and Horvitz).
The CED9 function is essential for development. Mutations that inactivate CED9 gene cause cells that normally live to undergo apoptosis and are embryonic lethal. This lethality can be rescued by a viral inhibitor of cell death by apoptosis, baculovirus p35 protein (Hengartner). Overexpression of mammalian BCL2
