Aven is an apoptosis inhibitor (362 amino acids), isolated from a cDNA library established from B-cells. The protein binds to the anti-apoptotic protein BCLxL and the caspase regulator APAF-1. Aven suppresses cell death by apoptosis induced by APAF-1 plus caspase-9. Aven has been shown to inhibit the proteolytic activation of caspases in a cell-free system (Chau et al, 2000).
