[autotic cell death] This form of cell death has been reported by Liu et al (2013). It is induced by treatment of cells with a cell-penetrating peptide derived from the autophagy protein Beclin-1 that induces high levels of autophagy. Autosis is blocked by pharmacological or genetic inhibition of autophagy, but not of apoptosis or necroptosis. Morphological features of autosis include increased numbers of autophagosomes / autolysosomes, enhanced cell-substrate adherence, early dilated and fragmented endoplasmic reticulum and ER disappearance (late), nuclear convolution at early stages, and focal swelling of the perinuclear space at late stages.
