approved gene symbol: APOA1. The amino acid sequence has been described by Brewer et al (1978). The cDNA has been cloned by Breslow et al (1982).
Apolipoprotein A1 is a relatively abundant plasma protein and the major apoprotein of high density lipoprotein (HDL). Apolipoprotein A1 participates in the transport of cholesterol between tissues and the liver by promoting cholesterol efflux and by acting as a cofactor for the lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase, a soluble enzyme that converts cholesterol and phosphatidylcholines (lecithins) to cholesteryl esters and lysophosphatidylcholines on the surface of high density lipoproteins (Jonas, 2000). Apolipoprotein A1 plasma levels are decreased in cardiovascular disease whereas high levels can be preventive (Mateos-Cáceres et al, 2004; Puchois et al, 1987; Reinhart et al, 1990).
