This toxin (abbr. CDT) is produced by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and is regarded as a putative virulence factor in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. The toxin consists of a complex of three proteins, termed CDTA, CDTB, CDTC, all of which are required for toxin activity (Akifusa et al, 2001; Shenker et al, 2004, 2005). CDTB and CDTC are responsible for the toxic activities of the toxin, whereas CDTA functions to anchor the toxin to the cell surface (Mao and DiRienzo, 2002).
CDT induces cell distension, irreversible growth arrest in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, nucleus swelling, and chromatin fragmentation in HeLa cells
