Acanthoscurrin is a glycine-rich antimicrobial peptide isolated from the hemocytes of unchallenged tarantula spider Acanthoscurria gomesiana. Two isoforms of acanthoscurrin, Acanthoscurrin-1 and Acanthoscurrin-2, have been identified. They differ by two glycine residues. Both isoforms contain a high percentage of glycine residues. Acanthoscurrins are constitutively expressed in hemocytes and released to plasma following an immune challenge (Lorenzini et al, 2003). Fukuzawa et al (2008) have shown that 57 % of the hemocytes of Acanthoscurria gomesiana store both acanthoscurrin and another antimicrobial peptide, gomesin, either in the same or in different granules.
