[AXIS microglial cells; Axon initial segment-associated microglia; AIS-associated microglia] These cells (Baalman et al, 2015) make up ~8 % of total cortical microglia. In uninjured brain, they specifically associate with the axon initial segment, a specialized membrane region in the axon of neurons where action potentials are initiated, and a major regulator of neuronal excitability (Kole and Stuart, 2012). As such, these specialised microglial cells are a subclass of satellite microglia.
