The murine ABCD-2 gene is located near the gene encoding ABCD-1. ABCD-2 is expressed highly in dendritic cells. ABCD-2 is expressed together with ABCD-1 in activated B-cells. The factor preferentially attracts Th2 T-helper cells (Schaniel et al, 1998, 1999).
ABCD-2 belongs to the group of cytokines known as CC-Chemokines. It is identical with TARC. The factor is known also as SCYA17. The approved gene symbol is CCL17.
This factor is known mainly because of its chemotactic activity. For an unrelated function as an antimicrobial peptide in innate immunity see: CCL17
